MIKA Kume had a chance of topping her age group at the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore triathlon yesterday, but her dream was punctured by what appears to be a deliberate act of sabotage: Someone had strewn thumb tacks along the bike route of the race.
At least four bikes were nailed, The Straits Times understands. Elvia Suryadi, 32, had to wheel her bike for 80 minutes barefoot, as she did not have a spare tyre with her. Marina Boulevard, Sunday, June 8, 2008 – George Lawson (1:36:09) and Monica Torres (1:51:51) were the fastest duathletes at the City Duathlon but the post-race conversations were centred on the confusion arising from the shortened bike leg.
Riders were expecting to cover five loops of 8km each but were left scratching their heads when their speedometers indicated only 20km at the end of their bike leg. It seems a failure in marshalling and route set-up led to the mistake. Courtesy of Red Sports. In any event of marshalling problem to arise, at least the cyclists are rest assured that they are on the right course, this is will prevent them from riding astray and also to ensure that the elites will have a smooth and uninterrupted race.” says Course Security SG. |
